Wood contains a high proportion of water regardless of whether it is a soft or hardwood. This allows the wood to adapt to its environment and weight without breaking.
If the air around the dining table becomes extremely dry or the wood dining table is placed near radiators that are really hot this can decrease the water within the wood. When this happens the wood is splits and weakens so it is important to avoid this happening for longevity.
So in terms of heat, avoid putting your solid wood dining table near radiators or heat sources. This can be fairly difficult but is worth trying to do. If this proves fairly difficult you can also use a humidifier to help keep the air from drying.
It is also important to keep your solid wood dining table out of direct sunlight. One way to deal with this is to use a tablecloth or keep blinds closes in that area. Generally this is easier for people to deal with then the radiator issue.
Another problem can be white marks that appear on your furniture. To avoid these always use coasters for plates and cups and try to prevent water from building up on the surface. There are various remedies available to overcome these marks however so don’t despair if your dining table already has marks.
