A solid wood dining table is still a popular and traditional choice even among the glass and metal dining tables of the world. Despite lacking a modern appeal, like the metal or glass tables, they offer a practical home-like feel to any dining room or household.

A solid wood dining table is a great investment because it is sturdy, durable and unlikely to break or get damaged. This cannot be said for a metal or glass dining table.

We have a huge range of Indian and solid oak dining tables available which have various different sizes from 3ft – 6ft so that finding the right dining table for you is easy.

Solid Wood Dining Table: Types of Wood

There are 2 types of wood for a solid wood dining table: either hardwood or softwood. Softwood comes from conifer trees and 80% of the world’s production is softwood. Softwoods are not necessarily softer than hardwood and both hardwood and softwood have different densities and variations.

Hardwood normally occurs at random in nature and is naturally growing. This means that felling and collection are more difficult and these types of wood are more expensive. Hardwood is also used less frequently for furniture and applied more as trimming for furniture instead.

Examples of softwoods would include pine, cedar, fir and spruce.

Examples of hardwoods would be mahogany, oak, elm, walnut, maple and birch.

Solid Wood Dining Table: New Versus Old

The great thing about solid wood is that buying second hand is a great idea if buying new isn’t possible. A second hand table will just be as sturdy as a new one as solid wood is durable and long lasting. You could also find a table to restore, as this can be a rewarding experience in itself. However don’t be put off second hand wood dining tables if the opportunity is available.

A solid wood dining table versus fibreboard (MDF)

Solid wood is always seen as more desirable than fibreboard or MDF furniture. There are many reasons for this but one of the most obvious is the fact that that most people find that if they have to move a piece of furniture made from MDF or fibreboard it is fragile and often results in either having to buy a new piece of furniture or having to repair the one they have. There is no strength in this type and therefore this type of furniture can be short lived.

A solid wood dining table on the other hand will withstand the times of hand. Although it might be heavier, when moving it will not fall apart and is highly unlikely to break.

Solid wood also looks more appealing and more expensive than fibreboard/MDF too. However if we look at the drawbacks of fibreboard and MDF we can acknowledge that over the long run we are more likely going to have to pay for more fibreboard furniture because of its short life span hence making solid wood a much more cost efficient purchase.
