There are 2 types of wood for a solid wood dining table: either hardwood or softwood. Softwood comes from conifer trees and 80% of the world’s production is softwood. Softwoods are not necessarily softer than hardwood and both hardwood and softwood have different densities and variations.

Hardwood normally occurs at random in nature and is naturally growing. This means that felling and collection are more difficult and these types of wood are more expensive. Hardwood is also used less frequently for furniture and applied more as trimming for furniture instead.

Examples of softwoods would include pine, cedar, fir and spruce.

Examples of hardwoods would be mahogany, oak, elm, walnut, maple and birch.

Solid Wood Dining Table: New Versus Old

The great thing about solid wood is that buying second hand is a great idea if buying new isn’t possible. A second hand table will just be as sturdy as a new one as solid wood is durable and long lasting. You could also find a table to restore, as this can be a rewarding experience in itself. Solid wood is always seen as more desirable than fibreboard or MDF furniture.
